As a 食品研究 minor, you will examine the essential role of food in the formation of identity, 历史, 政治, 社区, 文化, and the environment by critically studying foodways and food systems. You will learn how to apply your writing, 研究, and problem-solving skills to building 社区 across culture, and develop a strong sense of civic responsibility that prepares you for work and life in an ever-changing world.

The 18-credit minor in 食品研究 examines the essential role of food in the formation of identity, 历史, 政治, 社区, 文化 and the environment by critically studying foodways and food systems.

Topics of the courses from which students may choose include one or more of the following themes: food production and sustainability, 营养与健康, 食物政治, 政策, 还有饮食文化.

Students may also apply the concepts of their coursework to a variety of positions offered at local, 区域 or national organizations with a focus on food-related activities. 以营利为目的, 非营利性, non-governmental organizations and government agencies with an emphasis on aspects of food culture or food science may be selected for this experience.

Students completing the minor in 食品研究 will:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of multiple areas of food, food systems, 还有饮食文化.
  • Recognize the ways in which a complex network of foodways and food systems carry historical, 政治, 社会文化, diasporic, and economic impact on individuals and collectives.
  • 应用 critical thinking skills and evidence-based argumentation skills to persuade others through their writing and speaking about food studies.
  • Develop a sense of agency regarding their choices as they relate to food and food systems.
  • Address problems of significance by combining coursework with ethical community engagement at the local, 区域, 在全球范围内.
  • Examine and exhibit how sustainability is a core principle in their lives and in their 社区.
